Sharks in the time of Saviors by Kawai Strong Washburn
I loved this story of a Native family in Hawaii. It follows their struggles just trying to make ends meet while their three children strive to find themselves. Ninoa, the middle child has something that makes him extra special and it becomes clear one day when he is saved from drowning by sharks. His siblings struggle to cope with having a "chosen" brother as they make their way to the mainland. Full of lyrical prose and imagery this novel reminds us that the land has a history, a memory and the old gods may not have left these amazing islands.
